LOVE BROUGHT BACK THE LIGHT
(To the Tune of “All I Ask of You” from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA by Andrew Lloyd Webber)
SHEILA [spoken]: Hank…what was it like there?
HANK [spoken]: It wasn’t like anything. I don’t mean just that it was different from everything else; I mean that I didn’t feel anything at all—because nothing meant anything, except … the thought of you.
HANK [sung]: Winds blew out of darkness –
There was no day or night,
And nothing really mattered:
All that I’d known was shattered.
Lost in empty nothing,
There was no black or white,
Just dead and silent spaces,
A chart of unmarked places.
SHEILA [sung]: Still I searched for you,
through mist and shadow,
Through the Darkling’s shroud of mystery.
Though your way had wandered into nowhere,
Still I knew, you’d come back from the night,
When love brought back the light.
HANK: Wasn’t even hopeless;
Couldn’t even care.
The whole world there was shapeless,
Unmeaning, and escapeless.
SHEILA: I was hoping for you –
To lead you from despair.
I knew that I would find you;
The darkness couldn’t bind you.
HANK: It’s true, although the Darkling
loomed above me,
Somehow I knew love was shining through.
Somehow through it all I knew you’d love me;
I knew you would give me back my sight.
Your love would bring me back the light.
SHEILA: Though he tried to wrap the world in
darkness,
Stranding us in everlasting night –
BOTH: Still, the light broke through the winds of darkness–
SHEILA: So I found you…
HANK: …and all came right.
BOTH: Your love had brought me back the
light.
Now our sun is shining, strong and bright—
Your love has brought me back the light.
