Like Father, Like Son
It was a challenge that neither side could resist.
The Old Man has his faith, just as Venger did; the Old Man trusted they would succeed, just as he knew they would fail.Both convictions could not be correct, and the fate of the Realm would be decided by the six Young Ones, it would stand or fall by a single decision.
Venger had watched them for a long, long time. He had known the moment he saw them just what they were capable of. The hideous light of their hearts shone out like a torch in the darkness, tormenting his mind and hurting his eye when he drew too close.
He hated them for it.
He hated the innocence they brought; he hated the good they did; he hated them all for the Evil that they could not understand. And though he would plot and scheme and try to twist away, he could not break free of them. Their loyalty to his Father kept them locked together in interminable struggle.
Some part of Venger longed to tell them the truth, the long, sorry tale that was his history. He would show them how Dungeonmaster had been manipulating them, and watch in ecstasy as their innocence dissolved in betrayal. The Old Man had almost made it too easy for him. It would be a simple task to twist the truth far enough to imply complicity. Yet he always kept it secret, though he was no longer sure why.
But then, it is also true that they could have gone home, if they had truly wished to do so. Yet in the Realm they remained, like a benevolent cancer as strong as the power that had bound him to evil.
And he suspected that even if he did tell them of his Father, he would still not be rid of them!
So this was his only choice, his final chance. And succeed or fail, he would always hate them.
