QUEST OF THE SKELETON WARRIOR

SUMMARY

Dekkion, an undead skeleton warrior, has summoned Venger. He has discovered the resting place of an object called the Circle of Power. It is in the Tower of the Celestial Knights; but they can’t get in, only someone “pure of heart” can. But Venger knows of six who are pure of heart, and thinks they can be tricked into getting it!

Meanwhile, the kids are trying to cross a rickety rope bridge, with Eric grumbling as usual. The Dungeonmaster appears, and for a short time it is calm. The Lost Tower is ahead of them, he tells them, and it may hold a way home. But “you must defeat the enemy within yourselves.”

Lightning strikes the bridge as he leaves and it collapses, with Eric almost taking the long way down, but they all reach the other side. Waiting there is Dekkion, who wishes to talk to them.

They listen to his story – he was once a Celestial Knight, a band of mystic warriors who roamed the skies fighting the evil of this world. The other are gone and he fell under the spell of an evil wizard. He needs the Circle of Power from the Lost Tower, but the spell forbids him to enter. Moved by his story, and knowing there might be a way home, the others decide to help, much to Eric’s disgust, and follow Dekkion to the Tower.

It’s huge, but mysteriously bigger on the inside. From the moment they step inside, they all feel uneasy. Sheila is the first to disappear, she falls down a hole into a vast, empty

plane. She is alone, and she hates being alone.

Hank is separated next, a wall closes up behind him. On the other side of the wall, Presto tries magic, but just zaps himself and Eric somewhere else, leaving Bobby and Diana together.

Meantime, Hank tries and fails to open the wall up with arrows, so he continues to explore and try and find a way out. He finds a stairway and starts to climb. But the stairway disappears behind him. “Some leader I turned out to be.”

Stumbling along outside, Presto apologises to Eric from getting them into this, and gets “Face it, Presto you’re a first class nerd! That’s why people are always laughing at you!” Eric adds: “I would be afraid to go outside it I knew people were laughing at me!” A big blanket engulfs him, and transforms him into… a nerd! (much to Presto’s amusement). Before Presto can use his magic, flying creatures appear, and steal Presto’s glasses. The creatures fly around making fun of the two of them.

Bobby and Diana, with Uni, have walked into a strange hall full of mirrors. Uni is scared by something, and they go back to investigate. But as they look in it, they start to transform; bobby gets younger (more of a baby), and Diana gets older (too weak and feeble to do anything helpful). They can’t hold their weapons and are at the mercy of the beasts from the mirror.

Hank still running, but the collapsing floor finally catches up with him and he falls. He lands in a new room and, looking around, finds the Circle. Before he can take it from its stand, he suddenly hears the cries of the others. There is a crystal ball , where he sees what’s happening to them. He can’t help them and feels terrible “It’s all my fault, for agreeing to help Dekkion. Ever since we came to this world I’ve been afraid I’d fail, like the …”

With that, he suddenly realises the meaning of the riddle; The Tower is attacking them with the things that they each fear the most. He calls out to the others. As they overcome heir fears they are transported beside Hank.

Hank takes the Circle and they head off. Eric still disagrees about helping Dekkion, pointing out that it’s the way home, and how do they know Dekkion will give it back?

They reach the ruins, and Hank is just about to hand it over, when Dungeonmaster appears, and suggests Hank waits. He lets the Young Ones decide, but tells Dekkion that they should know the truth.

A long time ago, the battle-weary celestial knights were betrayed by one of their own, a young knight named Dekkion. He was promised a king’s treasure in exchange for leading the Knights into a trap. The kids are shocked, but Dekkion clearly regrets his acts, and has suffered for them. Dungeonmaster tells the that “evil deeds do return to their source, always come full circle. And their evil will never end until the circle is broken.”

The Dungeonmaster vanishes, just as Venger arrives. In the ensuing fight, Hank drops the Circle and Venger uses his power to bring it up to him, and blasting the Young Ones. But he refuses to release Dekkion, under the pretext that the Knight didn’t bring him the Circle, he got it for himself!

Venger uses it against Hank first, almost turning him into a skeleton like Dekkion. But Dekkion turns against Venger, using his sword’s power to force him to drop the Circle. Dekkion rescues Hank, recognising that their courage has shown him what to do - He fights Venger.

As he watched the battle, Presto figures out that they have to destroy the Circle of Power  – he throws it up into the air and Hank destroys it with an arrow.  The resulting tornado sucks Venger through, and changes Dekkion back to his true form.

The first thing he does is call for his flying steed, a war bird, and thanks the Young Ones for their help. He will return when he has found a way for them to get home, and Dekkion flies off into the sunset.

The kids are heading off again, discussing what happened. Hank and Diana talk, and Hank explains that by taking their said against Venger, he redeemed himself; it broke his circle of evil and set him free to be a Celestial Knight again.

After all these centuries Dekkion “summoned” Venger! How?

He has endured “centuries in enslavement” Hmm…Ten centuries, perhaps?

The Circle of Power, the weapon of the Celestial Knights, is in the Lost Tower of the Celestial Knights. Why didn’t they think to look there before? Especially since he was a Celestial Knight in the first place.

Dekkion is under Venger’s spell, but no details are given about how, or when. And it’s stated that he will never be released : “Since you will never release me from your spell…”

The Lost Tower of the Celestial Knights - “Only one who is pure of heart, who could be a Celestial Knight may enter the tower and survive its test of courage.” But Venger knows 6 who are Pure of Heart. Guess who!

“Great Leader!” Eric, to Hank, and it’s used as an insult!

Why is Uni sitting on Bobby’s head?

Dungeonmaster appears and the storm instantly stops.

Eric seems to be getting a good insight into the way Dungeonmaster works…

“In it you MAY find the power to return to your world” Dungeonmaster, about the Tower.

“What’s the catch this time?” – Eric.

“Overcome that which you fear the most. Defeat the enemy within yourselves.”

“What does THAT mean!” Diana.

“He’s not gonna tell us!” Eric.

You know, Eric is only saved from certain death at the very last minute –

“Don’t panic, just climb!” Hank – well, that’s useful after you’ve almost dropped to your death!

And no one seems to care that much. I’m not surprised he barges past them and he’s so sarcastic, with “What are you waiting for, you heard what Hank said!”

Presto’s glasses – “without these I can get lost in a closet.”

Why would he be so afraid of losing them? … But then, they are the ONLY thing that survived from their home.

Dekkion strikes first, after Eric starts backing away.

And Dekkion’s powers are very interesting. This is the only time he uses such a variety. Are they Celestial Knight powers, or are they from the spell? (I think they are from the Knights, as it would make more sense). His sword seems to be the source of a lot of his power. When Sheila removes it from him, is he then defenceless?

Dekkion can also manipulate fire.

The Hat produces a telephone. “It’s for you. It’s you mom…”

The Celestical Knights are described as “A band of mystical warriors”. They roamed the skies, fighting the evil forces of this world. The others are gone, and Dekkion fell under the spell of an evil wizard.

The Circle of Power is the Celestial Knights’ most powerful weapon, and it’s locked in the Lost Tower.

Only the Circle can free Dekkion – Can it? We only have his word for it.

Eric doesn’t want to help, and appeals to Hank to stop Sheila. He gets in a major strop at Hank - the “whenever your ready, Dekkion” mimicry.

The Tower is held up by magic; like the TARDIS, it’s bigger on the inside. And it’s locked.

Presto is very impressed. “Now that’s magic!”

The “ruins” Dekkion waits at are to the east – ruins of what – and why? And all the rest!

The tower attacks the things they fear the most –

Hank – a failure as a leader.

Sheila – being alone.

Diana – growing old and feeble

Bobby – being “the baby”

Presto – no glasses (a metaphor for helplessness and responsibility, perhaps?).

Eric – being laughed at (fragile self-esteem).

Sheila is all alone in a giant plane of nothingness and calls for Bobby (then Hank, then presto, then Eric). She is scared of being alone. It is the first time that that’s mentioned.

“Some leader I turned out to be.” Hank. He does acknowledge here that he IS the leader. (cf Dungeon at the Heart of Dawn).

Presto apologises forgetting them into this (apologises for his magic).

The Sheet - it transforms E into a “nerd” (and I love Don Most’s voice for this part – can’t think who it reminds me of, but there was someone..) Have to say that in this shot, it does look like his “breastplate” is not really made of steel!

Before Presto can use magic to change him back, flying things appear and steal his glasses, and make fun of him - “and that one thinks he’s a wizard…”

Aged Diana, for someone so healthy and fit, being old must have been horrible.

Her weapon is called a Javelin.

When Hank grabs the Circle, it lights up.

“Ever since we came to this world I’ve been afraid I’d fail, like the …” ???

“Who cares about your glasses, I lost my whole face” Eric

“Pull something useful out of that hat – like an aircraft carrier!”

And he does!! That’s just cool!

Presto is the one who calls out to Diana.

Eric still disagrees about helping Dekkion. The Circle is the way home, how do they know Dekkion will give it back?

The ruins are ruins of what? (Looks like Stonehenge)

The truth about Dekkion - “Battle-weary celestial knights were betrayed by one of their own, a young knight named Dekkion. He was promised a king’s treasure in exchange for leading the knights into a trap.”

Dungeonmaster vanishes, just as Venger arrives to claim the circle.

Melty-Hank is not a nice image.

Presto figures out the riddle this time.

Dekkion changes back – and his uniform is very, very like Eric’s!

The War-Bird looks like a kind of Eagle. Again parallels with Eric and the image on his Shield.

Looks like Uni might be prey! We wish, but War birds attack only evil

“I will return when he has found a way for them to get home.”

“We’ll never see him again!” Eric. (and as far as we know, he’s right.)

“Stupid unicorn – I said I like me uniform!” Eric (who gets the last line again!)

ALTERNATIVES

Prequel – how Dekkion became the Skeleton Warrior.

Who were the Knights fighting? (Um… Venger??) And what happened to the other Knights?

And what happened to Dekkion afterwards?

What was Hank referring to, the time he failed as a leader?

Now somewhere in the Realm, there is a US Navy aircraft carrier. What happened to that?
